Situated on the site of the former Summerlee Ironworks and a restored section of a branch of the Monklands Canal, Summerlee Heritage Park celebrated Lanarkshire's massive contribution to Scottish and worldwide engineering.
The 22 acre site opened in 1985 following excavation of the old ironworks site, which had been demolished and buried in the 1930s. Summerlee, "Scotland's noisiest museum", was awarded a four star attraction rating by Visit Scotland. Its collection included historical industrial machinery, much of which was seen in working order, a re-constructed 'Miner's Row' and electric tramway with both Edwardian and modern tramcars.
The redevelopment of the park will create a modern and environmentally sustainable setting for some of Scotland's most important displays of social and industrial history and continued celebration of Lanarkshire's and Scotland's industrial heritage.
